Our volunteers all share a love of the Lake District

Volunteers are an integral and valued part of the Lake District National Park team. Hundreds of people give their time and enthusiasm to look after the much loved landscape, and to inspire others to enjoy and care for this special place.

Nearly every day of the year volunteers will be out and about, maintaining paths, welcoming visitors, sharing knowledge on guided walks, surveying historic sites, improving habitats for wildlife and much more. From our 14 to 18 year old young rangers to those who have been with us for decades, volunteers enjoy getting outdoors and making friends while contributing to the future of the National Park.

Read on to find out more about some of our fantastic volunteers and the wide range of things they do.

Young Ranger in the mountains in the Lake District National Park

Aaron, Young Ranger

I’ve been doing young rangers for 2 years, I started for Bronze D of E and loved it so much that I’ve stayed ever since. I love being out in the Lakes. It feels like I can make a difference in preserving nature and make it a better place in terms of the environment. I really like the sense of community at young rangers. I knew a few people when I started but I’ve also met new people through it.

I’ve always enjoyed tree planting most. You can see how much you’ve contributed at the end of the day. I also really like the variety of the activities at young rangers.

Nicky, Guided Walk Leader

Nicky has been leading guided walks with the Lake District National Park Authority since 2019.

Newly retired, I went looking for volunteering opportunities that matched my interests. If you ask most volunteers why they do it the responses would generally be ‘to give something back’ or ‘to make a difference’ For me the role of volunteer Guided Walk Leader amply fulfils both of those criteria.

I have been a passionate hill-walker since my teens and it is a real privilege to be able to share that with visitors to the Lakes. The guided walks provide a great platform to show off the very best of the national park’s amazing landscape and also to take people slightly outside their comfort zone in a safe environment to experience the possibilities that lie beyond the busier areas of Bowness, Ambleside and Keswick.
