The Lake District National Park Authority is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
Compliance status
The website has been tested against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standard.
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.
Non-accessible content
The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.
Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
- Some maps use colour alone to differentiate information. This fails WCAG 1.4.1 Use of Colour (A).
- Some video iframes do not have appropriate aria role attributes. This fails WCAG 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value (A).
- Some image carousel content flags automated test tools for not correctly removing elements from the tab order, though we have tested the experience of these components and they should provide a good user experience. This fails WCAG 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value (A)
We are aware that there are a number of older documents on our website that have been posted since 2018 but are not fully accessible and may have issues such as those listed below. We are working to make all new documents more accessible on publication. If you find a document that is not accessible for your needs, please contact us using one of the routes described in the ‘Feedback and contact information’ section of this statement.
- Documents do not have titles (WCAG 2.4.2 Page Titled A)
Documents do not have programmatic languages set (WCAG 3.1.1 Language of Page) A - Documents do not have appropriate heading structures, table structures or list structures (WCAG 1.3.1 Info and Relationships A)
- Some documents have colour contrast issues (WCAG 1.4.3 Contrast Minimum AA)
- Some documents contain images of text or images without appropriate alternative text descriptions (WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text Content A and 1.4.5 Images of Text AA)
- Documents are missing any accessibility tags (WCAG 1.3.1 Info and Relationships A and 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value A)
If you find an issue that we have yet to identify, please contact us using one of the routes described in the ‘Feedback and contact information’ section of this statement.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations
Portable Document Format (PDF) and other documents
Some of our PDFs and Word documents are essential to providing our services. For example, we have PDFs with information on how users can access our services, and forms published as Word documents. We are currently working on fixing these essential documents or replacing them with accessible html web pages. This work will be completed by…
The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services.
Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.
Video content
We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations. We also have some existing pre-recorded video content that was published before the 23rd September 2020. This content is also exempt from the regulations. All new video content we produce will have appropriate captions, audio descriptions and transcripts as necessary.
Online Maps
Our service includes the use of online maps to show certain geographical information. These are not used for navigational purposes and are exempt under the regulations. If you require the information presented in an online map in a different format, please contact us to discuss reasonable adjustments.
Archive content
Some of the content, such as the Committee Papers Archive part of the website, is classified as an archive. This kind of historically recorded content is exempt from meeting the digital accessibility regulations. If you require a specific piece of archive content and it is not accessible, please contact us using the methods above and we will provide an accessible version of the content on request.
At this time, we have not identified any content that is not within scope of the accessibility regulations.
What we’re doing to improve accessibility
The Lake District National Park Authority is doing the following to improve accessibility:
Undertaking a review of all our published content to identify areas where we can change content from being in PDF or Word documents into HTML pages.
We are training staff to better understand the full spectrum of accessibility requirements and to learn why and how to produce accessible HTML, PDF and Word document content.
We are using an automated testing tool to help us identify areas of our website that do not meet accessibility requirements so that we can fix them.
We will audit the website periodically to identify areas of our website that do not meet accessibility requirements so that we can fix them.
