Essential bridge works are currently taking place along the Keswick to Threlkeld footpath.
Two wooden bridge decks on the Keswick to Threlkeld path, which is owned and managed by Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA), are being replaced to allow people to continue enjoying the trail for years to come.
The bridges are approximately 4km upstream from Keswick, or 1km downstream from the Threlkeld end of the trail at grid references NY304245 and NY306245.
The route will still be passable throughout the duration of the works, with a temporary scaffolding platform constructed above the level of the bridge deck allowing access. The temporary platform is wide enough to allow walkers, most cyclists and most standard wheelchairs to get through. Users of the route are advised that, due to technical constraints, the bypass route could not be made any wider than 75cm, so tricycles, wide prams and some wide mobility scooters may not get through while the temporary fixture is in place.
The new decks being installed are designed to complement the architecture of the route’s Victorian bridges and will have an expected working life of at least 30 years.
Carl Bradford, Ranger at LDNPA, said: “These important upgrades will help future-proof the bridges so people can continue to enjoy them for years to come. While the work is ongoing, we advise people to exercise caution around the area, however the route will still be passable while the works are underway.
“For safety, and to allow works to proceed on schedule, we ask all trail users to respect signage and keep out of all construction sites. This is the first phase of a programme of works to replace all of the wooden bridge decks along the route with more work due to take place in September 2026, after the school holidays.”
