Why is Helton special?

Helton is one of a string of settlements within the Lowther Valley which have attractive architectural and historic character. This includes:

The grouping of linear frontages of buildings around a green
A location on the valley side with extensive views
Surviving field patterns of medieval strip farming surrounding the village
Six listed buildings of special architectural and historic character
A number of other notable groups of historic buildings

Although modern development has undoubtedly left its mark on the village there is still significant character remaining that is worth conserving.

Helton Methodist Chapel erected in 1857, a Grade II listed building is the village's only historic structure specifically designed for religious use

Low Side Farm, a Grade II listed 17th century farmstead features a notable barn with traditional throughstones and historic nesting boxes

The Village Green is a central triangular open space provides a focal point for the settlement and offers expansive views across the Lowther Valley

Limestone rubble boundary walls constructed from local stone create a consistent visual link between the village dwellings and the surrounding medieval landscape
