People are being encouraged to use sustainable methods of transport to and around the Lake District ahead of a bout of sunny weather.
Warm weather is predicted across the UK and in the Lake District from Saturday 20 June through to the following week.
Emma Moody, Lead Strategy Adviser for Recreation and Sustainable Development at Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA), said: “The Lake District is a National Park for everyone. Here people can explore the beautiful landscape, connect with its nature, heritage and communities and learn how to help protect this special place.
“During periods of sunny and warmer weather, there are certain hotspots which face traffic pressures and can result in delays. We strongly urge where possible to explore by bus, boat and train, which are excellent ways to take in the beauty of the place.
“If you do need to travel by car, plan your journey in advance with back-up car park options to avoid parking on roadsides. Irresponsible parking can result in blocked roads, causing frustration and impacting local bus services as well as emergency service vehicles.”
Lake District bus fares are capped at £3 per journey, making it an affordable way to take in the National Park. Seasonal shuttle buses are also now running in Wasdale, from Cockermouth to Buttermere and in Ullswater. Search ‘plan your visit’ on www.lakedistrict.gov.uk for more information.
LDNPA is one of the partners in the Lake District Strategic Visitor Management Group, which has supported in coordinating additional temporary car parks, which will be open in certain areas of the National Park at peak times. The opening of these car parks is decided locally and is dependent on weather and traffic pressures, so look out for local information as needed.
The locations on what3words for some useful pop-up car parks include:
- Coniston East – process.incomes.stardom
- Walna Scar overflow – includes.radio.snowstorm
- Wasdale – ranking.savings.gloom
- Stonethwaite – affords.estates.accordion
Payment at these car parks can be made via the RingGo cashless app only, so download the app prior to visiting, in case there are mobile network limitations.
Emma also said: “Please do remember to leave no trace and enjoy your National Park responsibly by being Lake District Kind.”
