Agropastoral traditions, biodiversity, commons and grazing : Angus Winchester
Role:
Emeritus Professor of Local and Landscape History, Lancaster University
Angus is a local and landscape historian with particular research interests in the history of Cumbria and the evolution of upland rural landscapes in Britain.
Angus was Professor of Local & Landscape History in 2012 at Lancaster University. He served as Head of Department (2004-07) and as Director of the Regional Heritage Centre (2012-16). He retired in 2016 but remains active in research and writing and in speaking to a wide range of organisations.
His particular experience falls largely under the English Lake District Theme 1: ‘a landscape…shaped by persistent and distinctive agro-pastoral traditions‘. Several of his publications relate directly to this theme.
His in-depth historical study of the Buttermere/Crummock/Loweswater valley (The Language of the Landscape: a Journey into Lake District History (2019)) straddles both Themes 1 and 2.
