The Lake District National Park Authority is one of the six authorities who has worked with Natural England to upgrade Wainwright’s Coast to Coast to a National Trail.

The trail was first described by Wainwright in his book first published in 1973. At around 195 miles in length, and often frequently tackled as a continuous two-week journey, the route traverses through three National Parks across some of the UK’s most spectacular scenery from St Bees (Cumbria) to Robin Hood’s Bay (North Yorkshire). It’s widely believed to be the UK’s most popular long-distance path.

The upgrade to the National Trail project, led by Natural England, and funded by Defra, formally started on the 1 Nov 2022, and was completed at the end of March 2026.

The Coast to Coast Path National Trail crosses from the Irish Sea to the North Sea, over the fells of the Lake District, peaks of the Yorkshire Dales and moors of the North York Moors National Parks.
