Our commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

At the Lake District National Park Authority, we are committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion in everything we do. We believe everyone should have fair access to our services and employment opportunities, and we strive to create an environment where everyone feels respected and valued.

Equity is giving everyone what they need to have a fair chance at success, acknowledging that people start from different places.

Diversity means recognising, valuing, and including people with a wide range of differences, such as race, ethnicity, gender, age, abilities, beliefs, sexual orientation, and experience.

Inclusion means welcoming and valuing everyone, regardless of background, ability, or circumstance, ensuring they feel a sense of belonging and have equal opportunities to participate and thrive in society, education, or the workplace. It goes beyond diversity by actively removing barriers and empowering individuals.

Our goal is to ensure equal opportunities for all, promoting diversity and inclusion across our workforce and the communities we serve.

The Lake District National Park Authority is committed to ensuring that all practices and procedures are free from direct or indirect discrimination.

We’re dedicated to creating a workplace built on fairness, respect, and accountability.

While the Authority has legal obligations, individuals also play a vital role. Each of us is accountable for treating colleagues and members of the public with dignity and respect—because that’s how we build trust and a positive environment for everyone.

Our managers

Our managers act in line with the principles of this policy and make sure everyone understands and follows them. If something goes wrong, we take action—quickly and appropriately. We are committed to treating all employees fairly, listening to their views, and giving due consideration to their perspectives and those of anyone speaking or acting on their behalf.

Our staff and volunteers

Every employee and volunteer is aware of their responsibilities and know it’s a commitment we all share.

Following these principles is essential to maintaining a culture where everyone feels valued. If concerns arise, we address them fairly and transparently, ensuring that actions align with our values.

It’s important to remember that these responsibilities apply to all of us.

Our job applicants

We are committed to fair and merit-based recruitment. Our process ensures transparency by providing clear job descriptions and person specifications, requesting only relevant information, and offering support for applicants who need it. Vacancies are advertised widely, and selection is based solely on objective criteria. Interviews and tests are structured, consistent, and non-discriminatory, with appropriate facilities for candidates with disabilities. All decisions are documented, and feedback is available upon request. To maintain these standards, we train all staff involved in recruitment and selection.
