Frequently asked questions
As Ranger Services Volunteers, tasks vary according to location and any specialist roles within this volunteering area, however tasks may include:
- Task-focused work parties. These involve joining groups carrying out physical tasks such as, fixing fencing and signage, clearing vegetation, tree planting, litter picking, and maintaining rights of way. Work parties are led by a voluntary coordinator or member of staff.
- Positively engaging with visitors to and locals of the Park encountered whilst out volunteering, sharing your passion for the Park and local knowledge.
- Undertaking surveys, such as surveying users of trails.
- Maintaining training and attending Ranger Services meetings.
We ask for a minimum commitment of 12 days per year (including training and meetings) and recommend that volunteers undertake regular shifts to maintain engagement.
This role will suit you if you are:
- Enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the Lake District National Park.
- A good communicator and enjoy speaking with a wide range of people.
- Confident working in a small team.
- Comfortable walking and carrying out practical work outside on varied terrains.
We provide a volunteer induction and ongoing training and support throughout your time volunteering with the LDNPA; this includes first aid and navigation training for Ranger Services volunteers.

To apply, please complete the application form below on or before the 9th August. We will be selecting volunteers based on their experience and skills, enthusiasm for the role, and their availability. Please ensure that you give as much detail as possible when applying.
We will be hosting a drop-in afternoon for prospective volunteers to learn more about the role and meet staff from the Southern Ranger Team. This will take place at the LDNPA Southern Office in Haverthwaite on 11th August from 15:00-18:00. More details will be shared with applicants.
