Home Protect Climate action Climate projects

We have climate action projects across the Lake District, aiming to protect the National Park for future generations.

We have teamed up with other nature protection and management organisations to deliver impactful projects that protect the nature in our Park. Learn more about these nature projects below.

Barf Common peatland restoration

Cumbria Wildlife Trust and the Lake District National Park Authority completed a fantastic small-scale project restoring peatland on Barf Common, Cockermouth, funded by the Nature for Climate Peatland Restoration Fund.
Works included revegetating of bare peat and mineral soils, planting of Sphagnum plugs, installation of peat bunds, reprofiling of eroded hags and removal of  invasive Sitka spruce saplings. As works were already planned and contractors would be on-site, Fix the Fells and the Lake District National Park Authority took the opportunity to repair 300m of footpath. Access has now greatly improved and will protect the surrounding peat from further erosion.

Fairtrade and the Lake District

In partnership with Cumbria Fairtrade Network, we established the Lake District as the world’s first Fairtrade National Park Zone. This means we have committed to support both local farmers and Fairtrade producers in developing countries. We are doing this by encouraging more people to buy local and Fairtrade produce, getting more Fairtrade products into more retail and catering outlets, asking local workplaces and community groups to support Fairtrade and raising awareness of Fairtrade through events and press coverage.
