Heritage Management: Christopher Young

Christopher has a history first degree and an archaeology DPhil on the Roman Pottery Industry of the Oxford Region. Christopher worked for most of his career (1973-2014) for the Department of Environment and English Heritage as successively: Assistant Inspector of Ancient Monuments (1973-75); Inspector of Ancient Monuments (1975-79); Principal Inspector of Ancient Monuments (1979-1986); Regional Director for Historic Properties in the North (1986-1995); Director for Hadrian’s Wall (1995-1999) and Head of World Heritage and International Policy/Advice (1999-2014). He was part of the UK’s delegation to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee (1998-2014).
Christopher has carried out a Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA) at Stonehenge and peer-reviewed an HIA for Caernarfon Castle.
As EH Director for Hadrian’s Wall and then lead on World Heritage policy, Christopher worked on and implemented the first UK World Heritage Management Plan (for Hadrian’s Wall), was joint author of the second Stonehenge World Heritage Site Management Plan, and advised/ mentored several other world heritage management plans in England. He also advised on/ mentored all English world heritage nominations (1998-2014).
After retirement (mostly) he has carried out consultancy on world heritage nominations and/or management plans in Laos, Vietnam, Japan, India, Ireland and other European countries. He has also carried out reactive monitoring missions for UNESCO at Pompeii.
Christoper participated in many UNESCO world heritage international expert meetings and was heavily involved in the revision of the Operational Guidelines and first three rounds of Periodic Reporting.
After retirement, he participated in the preparation of world heritage nominations for Gorhams Cave, Gibraltar, the English Lake District, and Jodrell Bank, Cheshire.
