Warren is from a long-standing mining family who were copper miners and quarrymen at Coniston in the early 1800s. His subsequent family, including his mother, worked at Greenside Mine until its closure.

Warren is currently the Environmental Manager, for a large food manufacturing company in Carlisle. He is the Chair of  Cumbria Amenity Trust Mining History Society (CATMHS), a charity dedicated to the better understanding and preservation of historic mining sites (above and below ground) in Cumbria and a past president and current treasurer of Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society (CWAAS). Warren has 55 years of experience in mining and quarrying and has been involved in discoveries in the Lake District of international importance and was part of the Coniston copper Heritage Lottery Fund project. He is part of the Mines Forum which includes the Lake District National Park Authority, National Trust, CATMHS, Environment Agency, Mining Remediation Authority, Historic England, etc collaborating on mining and quarrying in the area. From 1999 to 2003 with a friend he organised an exhibition on Greenside Mine and life in Patterdale Parish when the mine was working. This interaction between industry and community

was replicated elsewhere in the Lake District and is a major contributory factor to Outstanding Universal Value. He also has an interest in anything industrial or community related.

From 2003 to 2013 Warren was the Clerk for Patterdale Parish Council, so knows the Ullswater Valley well.
