Chris consulted in the UK and internationally for universities and experiential education organisations. An outdoor education teacher and then youth worker, he has an interest in both adventure and environmental education. He lectured and researched Outdoor Studies with a special interest in human nature relations.

Chris is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and was the founding editor of the Journal of Adventure Education and Outdoor Leadership from 1980-2000. He was Chair of the European Outdoor Education Network for 6 years and a trustee of the John Muir Trust for 3. A professional Outdoor Educator for 52 years, he was the lead of the Brathay Trust Youth Programme from 1983-87. He founded ‘Adventure Education’, provided training to Outdoor Educators in Cumbria and beyond, and managed the Cumbrian Association of Residential Providers.

Moss of Many Layers: one of several projects nationally exploring community engagement with protected landscapes (see: https://theplacecollective.org/moss-of-many-layers/). As a result of this project Chris helped found the Place Collective, a group of artists working to engage communities with landscapes. He also helped found the Cumbria People Nature Network in 2022 (see: https://peoplenaturecumbria.org). He co-led the Inclusivity Outdoors national project in 2020.
