Home Explore Places to go Explore Northern Lakes Upgrade of Wainwright’s Coast to Coast to National Trail

The Lake District National Park Authority is one of the six authorities working with Natural England to upgrade Wainwright’s Coast to Coast to a National Trail.

The trail was first described by Wainwright in his book first published in 1973. At around 192 miles in length, and often frequently tackled as a continuous two-week journey, the route traverses through three National Parks across some of the UK’s most spectacular scenery from St Bees (Cumbria) to Robin Hood’s Bay (North Yorkshire). It’s widely believed to be the UK’s most popular long-distance path.

The project, led by Natural England, and funded by Defra, formally started on the 1 Nov 2022, and is due to be completed by the end of March 2026.
