Miller Beck rewiggling in the South Lakes

Funded through the Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) programme, farmer Paul Taylor has created valuable wetland habitat on his farm near Hazelrigg in the South Lakes. This small-scale nature recovery project involved opening a section of culvert, creating three scrapes (shallow ponds) and installing three leaky dams.

They also had an old, unmarked stream running through their higher land and three leaky dams were installed here too to encourage the area to become wetter. This has all been possible whilst maintaining farming operations.

Paul Taylor said: “Our small Lakeland farm now holds, filters and gradually releases more water helping the Windermere catchment.”
