Ian has both an MA and DPhil in geology from the University of Oxford. He was formerly Head of Earth Science Publishing, first at Blackwell, and then at Wiley-Blackwell. He is now retired. He is the co-author of The Lake District: Landscape and Geology (Crowood Press, 2022; see also https://www.lakedistrictgeology.co.uk/). Editor of The Cumberland Geologist journal. He is the co-author (with Carolina Goodship) of the Geodiversity Statement and Action Plan for Cumbria 2023 (see Cumbria Geodiversity Statement 2023). He is also the author of Celebrating Cumbria’s Geodiversity (Earth Heritage Magazine, Winter 2024 pp 29-33).

Active in Lake District geology through Cumbria GeoConservation and The Cumberland Geological Society.
