Historic Environment: Dr Myra Tolan-Smith

Role:

Listing Adviser, Listing Team (North), Historic England

Myra is a designation specialist working for Historic England and its predecessors since 1991. She provides assessments of significance for listing, scheduling and designed landscapes across the north of England as part of the organisation’s role as Government adviser. She has a PhD in landscape archaeology and is a member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists.

Myra has a particular interest in designed landscapes, prehistoric rock art, and vernacular buildings. She is enthusiastic about the historic environment and loves a complex site to unravel. The world heritage sites of Hadrian’s Wall, Durham Cathedral and Castle and the English Lake District fall within Myra’s current casework areas, and she is familiar with the Outstanding Universal Value of each. She is an experienced and skilled assessor of significance who reflects and articulates Outstanding Universal Value in her work.

In recent years she has worked extensively in the Lake District and has developed a good knowledge of its industrial sites, designed landscapes and vernacular buildings. Her knowledge and experience interconnects with all three themes of the English Lake District World Heritage Site.
