Farming : Sam Beaumont
Role:
Farmer
Sam has farmed with his family at Gowbarrow Hall Farm next to Ullswater since 2017, where they manage Shorthorn cattle, Kune Kune pigs and Fell ponies. With help from Wilderculture Community Interest Company they changed the direction of the business from high input sheep farming to becoming Pasture-for-Life Certified for their beef enterprise in 2019.
The farm is in organic conversion with Organic Farmers and has a Higher Tier Stewardship scheme focused on restoring species-rich grassland, ancient wood pasture and heather moorland. All of the animals are out-wintered with minimal supplementary feed, the beef and pork is sold direct to customers, and the family has also started to sell vegetables, herbs, and leather products from the farm. Sam has expertise in farming, grazing a common with cattle, walling, hedge laying, the management and restoration of semi-natural habitats, and hosting visitors to the farm
