The Lake District National Park is keen to share the message ‘Cumbria is open’, in support of our communities and businesses following last weekend’s weather. It’s important that people who are thinking of visiting this weekend know that the majority of places are still open and accessible throughout the national park. We are asking people to check routes in advance and will be sharing information on temporary rights of way closures on our website.

Our rangers have been out in the national park assessing the areas affected by the weekend’s flooding and are placing cordons where there is a safety issue with access. We are asking people to take cordons and signs seriously and not to cross them.

We are continuing to assess the impact of the flooding on the national park and at this time safety remains our leading priority. As part of the countywide recovery programme, our rangers are beginning to visit areas and log the damage caused to access across the park.

The weekend’s severe weather has had a significant impact on Cumbria and our thoughts are with all communities affected. We are part of a countywide flood recovery programme and we are currently helping to assess the impact on our communities. We will be working with partner organisations to set about tackling, what is certain to be, a lengthy and sustained recovery to restore our National Park.
