The first section of a brand-new £1.45 million multi-user trail that will go along the western shore of Windermere between Newby Bridge and the YMCA at Lakeside opens today in time for the spring holidays.

The Lake District National Park Authority works hard to ensure planning rules are followed and the special qualities of its spectacular landscape are safeguarded. As part of this work, it has been ruled that a car park at Low Grassings near Coniston must be removed.

A celebratory event was held recently to thank the dedicated team of volunteers who help look after the historic environment of the Lake District National Park through archaeological survey, research and conservation. The English Lake District UNESCO World Heritage Site is an area of national and international historical and cultural significance, and this team of volunteers has played a significant role in extending the knowledge of the Lake District’s archaeology and history.
