The search for the next leader of the Lake District National Park begins this week as recruitment opens for a new Chief Executive.
Described as one of the most sought-after roles in the environment sector, the leadership of England’s largest National Park and World Heritage Site is a challenge like no other. Having held the role for the past 16 years, it’s one outgoing Chief Executive, Richard Leafe, knows well.
“This is an exciting time to lead the National Park Authority,” said Richard. “The dedicated staff and volunteers work hard and are continually looking for new ways to care for this special place, balancing the future of farming, nature recovery and our race to become a net zero National Park. It’s bittersweet to step back from a role I’ve enjoyed so much for so long, but I know there will be an excellent leader out there who’s hungry for the challenge to guide the National Park through its next chapter.”
In addition to leading more than 200 staff, the Chief Executive helps set the overall strategy and vision for the Authority. They also work closely with Members, who are appointed by public bodies and make up the Authority’s board, and a range of partner organisations to manage the National Park.
Chair of the Lake District National Park Authority, Tiffany Hunt, explained the opportunity. “We’re looking for someone with strong, inspirational leadership skills and experience; a passion for the Lake District and the drive to help set out the vision and priorities for our next Partnership’s Management Plan. We welcome candidates from a wide range of backgrounds and look forward to receiving applications through our appointed recruitment partner.”
