It’s Volunteers’ Week (1 - 7 June) and the Lake District National Park is on the lookout for people who love the Lake District and want to play a central role in caring for and protecting this special UNESCO World Heritage site.
The volunteer team is taking part in a series of special events throughout the week to highlight the varied volunteering opportunities available within the Park and to outline the many benefits of volunteering.
The team will be at the Carlisle Volunteering Fair on Tuesday, in Kendal on Wednesday and in Whitehaven on Thursday this week to meet prospective volunteers. More information about these events here.
The search is on for people aged 16 and over with a passion for the Lake District to help with a range of jobs from welcoming visitors, helping with events and leading guided walks through to being involved with more practical, hands-on conservation projects.
People of all ages and backgrounds are being encouraged to help give something back and to join the 550 strong team of dedicated volunteers who already help keep this special place special.
Chris Wingrove, the Lake District National Park’s Volunteer Team Leader said: “We’re looking for enthusiastic people to join our amazing team. From those who can commit to helping out at certain events throughout the year, through to those who can dedicate a day a week or a fortnight towards helping with the never-ending task of keeping the Lake District beautiful.
“It’s not all physical work and we are looking for people with a wide range of skills to join us. Volunteers play a vital role in welcoming visitors to the National Park by helping at our visitor information centres offering invaluable advice and sharing their passion with others. We also need assistance with the more ‘hands-on’ work, like rebuilding paths and helping with planting out in the Park, so we’re on the lookout also for people who love being outdoors.
“In this Year of Green Action people from all over the UK are being encouraged to pledge ‘just one thing’ to help protect the environment and signing up to volunteer with us is an ideal way to do this.”
The benefits of volunteering are well documented and on top of helping care for the Lake District, volunteers can gain confidence, really make a difference, meet new people and be part of a community, learn new skills and push themselves to take on a challenge. But most importantly volunteering is a chance to have fun and what better place to do it than the Lake District National Park.
