As part of our celebration for 70 years of The Lake District National Park we’re showcasing our fantastic Miles without Stiles routes, and how the Lake District can be enjoyed by all. Our Lead Strategy Advisor, Emma Moody, tells us why Miles without Stiles are so important.
As part of the celebrations to mark the Lake District National Park Authority's 70th birthday, seven specially selected routes have been relaunched to really show off the variety of landscapes and environments that the Lake District has to offer.
The Bowness and Windermere community came together on Sunday (12 September) to celebrate the opening of the Lake District National Park Authority’s 50th accessible ‘Miles without Stiles’ route to the top of Alfred Wainwright’s first fell.
50 easy and accessible walking routes for wheelchairs, pushchairs and those with limited mobility, across the Lake District National Park.
This undulating route goes under the rocky ramparts of Yewdale fell side, through Yewdale Woods and links with other Miles without Stiles routes.

Miles without stiles route 44 - High Tilberthwaite to Little Langdale and Slater Bridge.

The charity, Campaign for National Park launched its New Perspectives Bursary scheme back in 2021. Aimed at 18-35 year-olds with a story to tell about National Parks in England and Wales. The scheme provided funding, support and training to make a diverse range of voices heard.
Miles without stiles route 47 - Wray Castle to Outgate and Low Loanthwaite.
A route from the bottom of the car park beside the cafe and information centre at National Trust's Sizergh Castle, a 1.9km circular route.
An undulating short route with short steeper sections but suitable for wheelchair users, in the heart of the Jaws of Borrowdale.

A stunning walk taking in lakeside meadows, an iconic bridge, roaring waterfall and great food.
This short route takes you from the waterfront of Ravenglass across the River Mite and on to the beachfront at Saltcoats.
Miles without stiles route 46 - Clappersgate to Wray Castle.
Improvement works have recently been completed at either end of the Ullswater Valley to make these paths more accessible than ever.
